Correlation of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and gold complications in rheumatoid arthritis.

چکیده
Certain observations have been reported according to which complications in association with gold therapy in rheumatoid arthritis would seem to be inversely proportional to the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (Goldie, 1939; Ellman and others, 1940; Lawrence, 1953). This has been explained on the basis that a high E.S.R. is generally seen in the active exudative stage of the disease, and that the gold, which has become bound to the globulins, is then able to penetrate through the damaged capillaries into the diseased tissue. Consequently the gold concentration in the skin, bone marrow, and other tissues is unable to attain the same levels as when the E.S.R. is low and the disease is in a less active stage. Since this point is an important one in clinical practice, I have observed the possible correlation of gold complications and E.S.R. in patients receiving continuous gold therapy at the Turku Polyclinic for Rheumatic Diseases.

Depicting and comparing the time to normalize \"erythrocyte sedimentation rate\" following two combination therapies in rheumatoid arthritis patients: a randomized clinical trial
Background: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is one of the predictors of improvement in handling rheumatoid arthritis. This study was designed to define and compare the time of achieving normal ESR and also the percentage for the normalization of this marker at several points of time in two different combination therapies. Methods: Fifty-two rheumatoid arthritis patients randomly received me...
متن کاملRelationship between erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum C-reactive protein in rheumatoid arthritis.
Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were compared in 241 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). There was a positive linear correlation between the 2 measurements with a high degree of variability. Neither age nor duration of RA had a detectable influence. The relationship between CRP and ESR was, however, altered by treatment with gold, penicillamine, ...
متن کاملbeta 2-Microglobulin levels in serum and urine of rheumatoid arthritis patients on gold therapy.
The levels of beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2-m) in serum and urine of 24 seropositive patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with regular gold (sodium aurothiomalate) injections have been investigated. The values obtained were compared with levels from 20 seropositive patients with RA treated only with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and 20 age and sex matched normal controls who ha...
